He sat across the table from me. Cappuccino in hand. A small milk moustache formed around his face and he had that cheeky kind of look people give you that says “I know something you don’t”
“Go build it yourself, Ben”, he said… “People will flock to it and to you”
And he was right!

Laughter is the only response as I reminisce back to 20+ years ago at the beginning of this entrepreneurial journey
As a 20 year old, all I could find were wantrepreneurs who spoke a big game, but always failed to execute. I felt very lonely and unsupported
And I mean sure… I had staff and contractors. But that relationship is of a different kind – isn’t it?
None of them were there to offer a heartfelt “It’ll be alright” when I was staring at the dreaded $0 in my bank account after making one too many mistakes.
All they’d ever ask was a structure of 11 words. I dreaded hearing them as my heart stopped beating every time one of them did
… “am I going to be paid, Ben? And if so, when?”
I went into debt, and managed to turn it around in 18months. Focusing on mastering a lot of the basic entrepreneurial skills helped a lot. But regardless of that success, I still felt lonely.
…and that’s when I found myself staring across the table at this man with the cheeky grin
